16 Days of Activism – Empowering Local Girls to Lead Change

ree

This 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), which runs from 25 November to 10 December 2020 is a special one for us at WHAI Africa considering how the COVID19 pandemic has increased the rates of GBV and school dropouts among the girls in local communities we work.

The Covid-19 pandemic gripped the vulnerable communities, the women and girls’ rights were marched upon, and their insecurity in the communities worsened with high rate of rape and GBV cases.

In a particular school in Ayamelum LGA of Anambra state, over 65% of the students who managed to write the junior exams have not return to the school to continue their education.

Hence for the 16 days, WHAI Africa will be celebrating the inspiring voices of our local girls who are currently getting empowered through the Girls Lead Club of Local2Global project by the World Connect. They are the future women leaders speaking up to mitigate the troubling impact of COVID-19 on their fellow girls in the vulnerable communities.

Also, to mark 16 Days of Activism against the GBV, we would be acknowledging and celebrating supporters of WHAI Africa’s work in vulnerable communities. The stress and difficulties WHAI Africa volunteers pass through to get to those hard-2-reach communities.
